André Previn, Lorin Maazel and Mariss Jansons are the conductors who, over decades, shaped the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra into one of the world's best ensembles. Since 2009, it is the Austrian Manfred Honeck who has been moulding the sound of this renowned orchestra with impressive success. Under his direction, the Pennsylvanian musicians return to the Wolkenturm for a double reunion. Two favourite figures of international classical music join them as soloists on each evening: Hélène Grimaud in Ravel's Piano Concerto, and Gautier Capuçon in the Cello Concerto by Dvořák.
Two charismatic violinists are the focus of further concerts over this weekend: Patricia Kopatchinskaja journeys through music history as soloist in a matinee with Il Giardino Armonico in the Auditorium, and Bomsori Kim performs Nielsen's enchanting, romantic Violin Concerto with the Tonkunstler Orchestra under Fabio Luisi.
Kicking off the weekend is the European Union Youth Orchestra, who get hearts racing at the Wolkenturm year after year. In 2022 they'll raise the pulse with a programme that includes Stravinsky's thrilling «Sacre du printemps».
