Brahms • Tchaikovsky
On its second evening in Grafenegg, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra takes to the stage on the Wolkenturm with Zubin Mehta and Rudolf Buchbinder. The Artistic Director gives us a work of great orchestral Romanticism in the First Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms.
The composer himself wrote to a friend about the unsuccessful premiere and how it came to be «that my concerto was resplendent and decisive in failure». Hard to imagine given the later triumph of the virtuosic work, whose passion and fire are also to be found in Tchaikovsky’s «Pathétique» in the second half.
