Even the creation of the opera was about brotherly and sisterly love: the libretto of nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera came from his sister Adelheid. Captivated by the late-Romantic music, the siblings of the story are drawn to the witch in the forest – and nearly into her oven. At the end, when all the pieces of the gingerbread house transform back into the children that they were before, the effect is pure magic. A breath of Christmas is in the air – Humperdinck’s hit is therefore one of the classics of Advent. Especially put together for Grafenegg, this suite combines its most beautiful melodies. The trumpet is the perfect instrument for Advent. And one of its greatest masters is Häkan Hardenberger, who plays Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.
