Symphony No. 6 in a minor «Tragic»
Boston Symphony Orchestra • Andris Nelsons
Mahler
The second oldest of the so-called «Big Five», the Boston Symphony Orchestra, makes its Wolkenturm debut. On its first tour with Music Director Andris Nelsons, who took up his post at the start of 14-15 season, the leading American orchestra sets its sights on one of the greatest milestones in the symphonic repertoire:
Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, later given the epithet the «Tragic» because of its melancholy ending. The fateful hammer blows immortalised by Mahler in the score became legendary. Alma Mahler later interpreted them as the defining moments in her husband’s life.
