Richard Strauss: «Four last songs» for Soprano and Orchestra

Introduction/abstract

The Cleveland Orchestra · Luba Orgonášová · Franz Welser-Möst

Bartók · Strauss

To listen to Richard Strauss’s «Four Last Songs» is to hear a soul sighing, to hold a mirror to human existence. The programme combining Bartók and Strauss is the logical continuation of the «Sinfonia domestica», performed by Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra the previous evening. In the song «Abendrot», Strauss quotes from his «Death and Transfiguration», a work full of humility that reveals the pain and the beauty in saying farewell.

Soprano Luba Orgonášová was discovered by Herbert von Karajan and worked with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, specialising in Mozart roles. Now, with Welser-Möst at her side, she performs Strauss’s intimate song cycle.
