Introduction/abstract

Haydn • Wagner • Brahms

The Vienna Philharmonic and Semyon Bychkov have put together a remarkable programme for their concert in Grafenegg. It begins with Haydn’s aptly labelled «Trauer» or «Funeral» Symphony, which is among his few orchestral works in a minor key.

In contrast, Wagner’s «Wesendonck-Lieder», which the composer dedicated to his muse, will lend the Wolkenturm vocal radiance in a performance by star Austrian mezzo soprano Elisabeth Kulman. In contrast again to Wagner’s aesthetic ideas, Johannes Brahms’ Third Symphony concludes this extraordinary evening.
