Sir Simon Rattle can always be relied on to provide tailor-made, finely balanced programmes. At this first concert of his two-day Grafenegg visit with the London Symphony Orchestra, the world-famous British conductor places very different works alongside each other. This offers the opportunity to hear classics of the repertoire, such as Ravel’s «La Valse» and Bartók’s concert suite «The Miraculous Mandarin» as if for the first time – or, in the case of Sibelius’s 7th Symphony, quite possibly to literally hear it for the first time. And there’s more after the concert: selected musicians from the orchestra provide a Late Night Session in the Riding School to bring the evening to an evocative close.
